Large-scale brackish water desalination plant for beverage production

As a supplier of holistic industrial water treatment solutions we offer made-to-order and turnkey industrial plants. One example of such is this project in Peru from 2014:

In 2013-2014, we realised the largest water treatment plant in the Lima region of Peru for a renowned beverage manufacturer. The industrial plant produces internationally and nationally known softdrinks and supplies the entire north of Peru.

When it was commissioned, the large-scale plant was able to treat 500 m³/h of water and was deliberately engineered to be flexible to allow for changes and expansions in the plant technology and also to withstand changes in the raw water quality.

In continuous cooperation, Chriwa is supplying and expanding the industrial plant until today in 2023!

The plant is used for the desalination of brackish water and the treatment of the water as product water for beverage production. Essential components of the plant are the so-called multi-layer filtration (gravel filtration and activated carbon filtration), reverse osmosis, chlorine electrolysis, UV disinfection, ozonisation and a backwash water recovery system.

The desalination of this raw water demands a sophisticated treatment concept and the use of highly resistant materials for the equipment.

Due to the regional water shortage, there are also strict regulations for water consumption and thus particularly high demands on the efficiency of water treatment.

Such high demands from the customer on this scale require excellent engineering. Chriwa supplies the water treatment technology for several large plants in Peru and neighbouring countries and has its own technical support team in the region.

As a turnkey supplier, our scope of supply and services for this project includes, in addition to project planning and customised engineering, the mechanical design of the equipment, pre-assembly in our factory as well as mechanical and electrical installation, commissioning and training on site. We also supply the plant control system with the corresponding process visualisation for this fully automatic plant.

Downstream after commissioning, we offer our after-sales service with maintenance, repair, wear and spare parts and operating materials. We accompany customers during and after projects and stay in touch to continuously contribute our expertise in process engineering.

The plant has been continuously expanded over the years to increase the plant capacity to more than 700 m³/h of treated water. To increase the water yield, a concentrate reverse osmosis system was installed downstream of the reverse osmosis system to recover additional product water. This recycling is a must due to the scarcity of water and increases the profitability of the plant. In the process, water with enormously high salt contents, higher than seawater, is treated as product water. The plant technology must therefore permanently withstand such salt concentrations and use correspondingly anti-corrosive material, as well as be robust enough to withstand the high water pressures.

Chriwa regularly supplies the necessary operating materials for the plant. This includes spare parts and the filter material for the gravel and activated carbon filters. For the membranes, correctly calculated antiscaling is important.

Follow-up orders until today. For 50 years now, the Chriwa Group has been supplying industries and municipalities worldwide with water treatment systems. The quality and continuity of our products is ensured by our permanent staff, which has grown over decades, and our long-term cooperation with suppliers. This enables us to achieve strong adherence to the desired water quality, so that the end product of our customers reliably has the optimum properties always and everywhere.

Water treatment for beverage production in South East Asia

As a supplier of holistic industrial water treatment solutions we offer made-to-order and turnkey industrial plants. One example of such is this project in Cambodia from 2016:

In 2016 Chriwa realised a water treatment plant for a renowned international beverage manufacturer in Phnom Penh. This turnkey large-scale plant was designed, designed, manufactured, delivered, assembled, and commissioned in terms of process technology by us. In addition, we supply to this day operating material, spare parts and offer after-sales services.

The plant supplies product water to produce carbonated soft drinks and table water and has a treatment capacity of 120 m³/h and is part of a larger 100 million US dollar greenfield project in the region.

Chriwa was chosen by the customer because we meet the high demands in terms of execution quality and process technology and can offer the best possible system yield. Hundreds of successful projects for beverage manufacturers worldwide demonstrate our commitment to the highest water quality.

The plant is supplied with city water, which can have low mineralization but significant fluctuations, especially in terms of turbidity.

First, the raw water is chlorinated before it is then discharged into the on-site stacking tank. The chlorinated water is then pumped to the further water treatment with the help of a pumping station.

First a bag filtration removes larger particles from the water.

The task of the downstream ultrafiltration (UF) is primarily to remove the turbidity from the water.

The system ensures a consistent filtrate quality (SDI value <2.5), even with increased turbidity values in the inlet. Thanks to the intelligent system control, the plant's yield is automatically adjusted to the inlet water quality. This ensures stable system operation and a particularly long service life of the UF modules.

The UF filtrate is temporarily stored in a buffer tank and then treated with activated carbon filtration.

The activated carbon is primarily used for dechlorination and for the removal of unwanted tastes and odours in the water. The water is then filtered via candle filters with a separation rate of 5 μm.

With the help of a caustic soda dosing station, the pH value in the inlet to the reverse osmosis system is adjusted to stabilize the water and to meet the requirements for the high system yield. UV disinfection of the now dechlorinated water also ensures a reliable and harmless way of killing possible viruses, bacteria, and germs of all kinds. This prepares the water for the downstream reverse osmosis systems.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is used to produce soft drinks. A second, RO system for the permeate treats the water to produce table water. Elevated silicon and bromide levels in the water in particular must be reduced. The RO systems are equipped with stainless steel pressure pipes and special membranes, which allow automatic cleaning with hot water up to 85°C.

The permeate for soft drinks and table water is each temporarily stored in a stacking tank. The permeate tanks are equipped with sterile ventilation and a recirculation line with UV disinfection to guarantee the hygienic safety of the treated water. If necessary, the stacking tanks can be cleaned with the help of a CIP spray ball.

Specially designed ring lines on the fillers also ensure permanent recirculation of the treated water and complete cleanability of the treated water pipes.

The system has a Siemens PLC control system, which we have custom-developed to meet customer needs. The system is operated fully automatically via a central touch control unit.

In 2020 and 2023, we carried out expansions to increase the maximum output by a further 80 m³/h.

Large-scale brackish water desalination plant for municipal waterworks

As a supplier of holistic industrial water treatment solutions we offer made-to-order and turnkey industrial plants. One example of such is this project in Algeria from 2020:

Chriwa has realised a desalination plant in the city of El-Oued, Algeria, for the treatment of brackish water to drinking water from 2017 - 2020.

Chriwa‘s scope of services includes project planning, design, engineering, manufacturing, delivery, installation, electrical, automation and measurement technology as well as commissioning of the entire plant.

The plant technology consists of the components:

- Pumping station for filtered water

- Dosing

- Microfiltration

- High-pressure pumping station

- Reverse osmosis unit

- Membrane filter cleaning

- ESMR technology SPS S7

The capacity of the plant is 30,000 m³/d.

The water supply is provided by 3 deep wells. The water filtered by an on-site pre-filtration is sucked through a welded manifold and transported to the downstream fine filters (fineness 5 µm) by means of 4 feed pumps. The chlorine concentration and the conductivity of the water are measured between the pump station and the fine filters to monitor the process.

In the pressure line to the fine filters, the water is dechlorinated by dosing sodium bisulphite. Antiscaling is also dosed here to prevent precipitation within the reverse osmosis system. Both dosages are adjusted proportionally to the flow rate.

The water then passes through the 5 µm fine filters, which are dimensioned for the entire nominal flow rate. The delivery includes eight units with 39x40“ cartridges in each unit.

At the outlet of the fine filters, the water is brought to the osmotic pressure required for the process by means of high-pressure pumps. After the high-pressure pumps, a redox meter (ORP) is installed to monitor the residual chlorine. The pH value of the water and the temperature are also measured and monitored upstream of the reverse osmosis units.

The demineralisation process by reverse osmosis is dimensioned to guarantee the nominal flow rate in the used condition after three years of operation. The plant comprises four reverse osmosis units with a capacity of

4 x 315 m³/h of treated water and the recovery rate is 75 %.

To remove possible deposits on the membranes, the plant has an automatic membrane cleaning system. Cleaning takes place in individual stages.

After the Chriwa reverse osmosis desalination plant, the conductivity of the permeate is checked again and the treated water is then transferred to the storage and mixing tank for further use.

Water supply for a greenfield dairy facility

Chriwa supplied the complete water treatment technology for one of the most modern dairies in Europe, from the transfer of the city water to the delivery of the different desired water qualities to the interfaces within the dairy in 2021.

At the heart of the large-scale plant are the multi-stage and yield-optimized reverse osmosis systems for the treatment of the process water as well as the storage and distribution of the water required during operation. Other methods used include physical filtration, UV disinfection and a mobile dosing station.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the raw water has changing chemical parameters such as hardness due to the connection to two different water supply sources. Our treatment technology has to treat these waters for five different processes.  The desired parameters were met by blending filtered water with reverse osmosis permeate in ratios corresponding to conductivity and hardness.

A further, highly efficient post-processing system is available to supply the steam generation.

To ensure security of supply, a redundant system design was chosen and the plant technology was planned and executed according to hygienic aspects.

The water treatment system filters primarily for the food industry and secondarily for technical water, e.g. for supplying the steam boiler or the cooling towers. To prevent cross-contamination between the waters, the system was deliberately installed with specific pipe/system separators and close to the pump groups.

The water supply of max. 650 m³/h for this completely newly built production site enables the processing of up to 800 million kilograms of milk per year into high-quality dairy products.

The complete plant technology was planned, manufactured and delivered at the Hambühren headquarters, assembled by us and put into operation in terms of process technology. To this day, we supply the company with spare parts and operating materials.
